Pupils raise the roof with Christmas carols

Young singers from East Lancashire hit all the right notes when they took part in a carol competition at Oswaldtwistle Mills.

Students from Moor End Community Primary School, Oswaldtwistle went up against 11 other primary schools from the area and sang a selection of Christmas carols, hymns and other favourites to get shoppers in the Christmas spirit.

Bob Dunn, who has an MBE for youth services, had the difficult task of deciding which school should be crowned the winner, judging overall performance and crowd responsiveness.

He said: “I was delighted when Oswaldtwistle Mills invited me to judge the competition and hearing the students singing certainly filled the room with festive cheer.

“Both students and teachers put a lot of effort into making their performance stand out from the rest, with some implementing actions to accompany their singing and others sang traditional songs with a twist which was very imaginative.”

Dressed in Santa hats and tinsel, over 300 pupils from 12 primary schools across Lancashire took part in the month long singing extravaganza which was a bit of fun to fill everyone with festive cheer.

Claire O’Grady from Oswaldtwistle Mills co-ordinated the event. She said: “The pupils really did Deck the Halls and generated a very Christmassy atmosphere in the store.

“Staff and shoppers loved seeing the young children in a sea of red and white fur, it really did put smiles on faces and it was a tremendous success enjoyed by many.”

Participating schools received a small thank you gift from Oswaldtwistle Mills and winners Holy souls Roman Catholic Primary school won £75, Euxton Church of England Primary School won £50 and Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Primary School won £25 gift voucher to spend in store.
